Does it do it in 2x4, 4x4, or both? Shimee as in front axle like death wobble? My first wild a$$ guess would be front axle U-joints or perhaps pinion bearings. Loose rear axle pinion bearings will make vibration in reverse and should also be present on deceleration driving forward.

    What engine?

The usual suspects for shimmy are worn tie rod ends, ball joints, spring shackle/hanger bushings, wheel bearings, improper caster/toe-in, and bad or unbalanced tires. But you experience that shimmy driving forward, usually in the 25-50 mph range, and driving in reverse would be too slow for most of that to have any effect.

    Please post what you discover!

In 2wd, from a stand still, letting the clutch out in reverse, vibrates significantly.
    Ty for your input!

If the vibration is all from the rear axle, very likely it is the pinion bearings. Jack the rear axle up and check the movement of the pinion u-joint yoke. There shouldn't be any perceptable movement other than rotational. I can't remember if the 72 models use a crush sleeve to set the pinion preload or it those use the shim packs like the pre72 CJ's. You will need the factory service manual (FSM) to install new bearings and set the preload. The FSM is available on-line here: http://www.earlycj5.com/xf_cj5/index.php?resources/15/history

Not sure if you can see that/download it without joining the Early CJ5 site but that site is the best source of information on pre 76 CJ's.
