Best to change the oil filter which is relatively inexpensive and ez to install. This DIY oil change thread is excellent. Stick with the Mopar oil filter. I stock up on filters via Amazon. In my book Castro is fine. Not just $ saved but personal satisfaction and job done right with care. IME the JK oil service is one of the easiest.

This may be a stupid question, but currently my engine has 5W-30 conventional. Obviously going to go with Full synthetic doing it myself. Question is, do I need to flush it somehow after emptying the conventional before I add in the Full synthetic?

Nope just drain old oil, replace filter+drainplug and refill.

Got everything I need to do my oil change. Will be doing it in the next 2-3weeks or so, depending on which weekend I have more time. Have other stuff to fix around house that’s suppercedes the oil change.

Did my routine oil change and a load of laundry tonight. All in less than an hour. And I didn't even need chris4x4's instructional DIY laundry thread.

Hahaha. I just want to give myself like 30min since it's my first attempt. Time is kinda hard to do in my household with my 3 & 5yr olds running around. And I also want to hit 3,500miles since my last change before changing.

And where is the laundry DIY thread, I can't find it? J/k lol

Give yourself plenty of time. More than an hour if its your first time. That way, if you have an issue pop up, you have ti9me to think it thru, rather than rush and make things worse.

Just completed my oil change. Pretty simple just like you said and there were no issues with your detailed instructions. No more paying for oil changes in the future.

Thanks again Chris4x4 for this thread!

Yes.@chris4x4 can be quite informative....when he's on his meds that is. o_O.

See that dude. Cut labor costs from your oil change. AND....you get to mess with your Jeep. :D. Next up...tire rotation. :).

Who else is using Pennzoil Ultra Platinum? Where is the best place to get it? Our Walmart and Advance only have Pennzoil Platinum. I may just go with that, but I’d rather go Ultra if it’s easy to get.

IMO regular OCI with quality oil will be fine. Not sure what the "ultra" benefit is but nearly everything is available on Amazon. Walmart does have good prices on motor oil that beats the parts stores.

3 inch zone lift. Fox 2.0 shocks. 35 inch nitto ridge grapplers. Bushwacker flat fenders. No name steel bumpers front and back for now.
Here lately I've been fond of mobil1 full synthetic oil and Bosch oil filters. The Bosch filters are a little pricey but the Mobil1 is right in the middle of the quality oil spectrum. I havent had issues with it so far

I do Pennzoil ultra platinum. Purchase mine through Amazon. It's $33 right now but when I purchased I got it for $24(and got a $10 rebate so really only paid $14). Watch the price should go back to around$24(5Quarts).

Oil filter does not have to be changed every time you change the oil, but for the price I do it. The brand and whether it is regular oil or synthetic is up to you. How much you save on an oil change depends upon where you take your vehicle for service, whether you buy your oil and filter on sale and always have some on hand or pay full price when it comes time to have it done. I can change the oil in my Jeep in 12 minutes in the driveway. Not too bad for a guy who will be 70 in a couple of weeks. I have everything ready when I start. I do have one speed(SLOW) and always make sure I went to the bathroom before I start.

Again, I do not care what other people use in the way of oil or filters. I found out about oversize filters on the XJ forums so I use the NAPA gold 1515 oversize. I buy them in bulk when my local NAPA store has its annual customer appreciation sale. I got the last batch for about $3.60 each. I have about 30 on the shelf in the garage as I write this. For those who did not look at my info I have 4 XJ'x and also a 94 Grand with the 4.0 to service. I also buy my oil on sale. NAPA will sell it for around $2.49 /quart at times. I usually have at least 6 cases on hand at any one time. I also keep certain additives around. As I stated to each his own. I also like the ability to look around while I'm under the vehicle and decide on any upcoming work I may want to do or have done on the vehicle. Ayways keep written record of repairs and service. It can be hard enough with one Jeep. With 5, It keeps you on your toes.
