98 Cherokee wont shift into overdrive

Ok, I had my 98 Cherokee since new. BEST Ever! Never no problems and currently at 350,000! Dont burn a drop of oil and Never ANY Tranny issues. Ok , very long story short, My headlight on/off knob and switch broke off. I like to do things on my own so I replaced it but forgot to disconnect battery and ended up blowing the fuse or fuses. I Replaced...Suddenly my engine light came on and I noticed my jeep still shifts perfectly but refuses to go into Drive on highway. BUT!, IF I stop, turn key on/off it will go into Drive but only for 10 secs, and goes back to 4th. I had a guy look at it but his problem is his computer will not communicate and either will auto zones etc. So he really dont wanna work on it and either does the other 10 garages i went to. So I did find here that someone fixed the issue on there 98 replacing the neutral safty switch And Garage guy did say one of codes pointed to that( after he told me he didnt get any codes
..)
So..I hardly have any money and b4 I buy this I kinda want to tall to you guys first.

Oh, the guy did try and clear it by disconnecting battery cable and swithing ignition 10x..i also lwy it sit for an hour unconnected and did the gas peddle thing.

 

When you put it in reverse do the back up lights come on?

 

Umm never checked, still at garage, waiting for a ride so i can pick it up..i can call garage, ill call see if they checked that

 

WOW garage called. the lights DO NOT WORK. So you know what it is?

 

Justine you have a couple of topics - the issues and information are ALL over.

SO the issues are
1) Will not shift into 4th - OK Was this the reason for replacing NSS ?
2) back up lights inop.

My jeep will not shift into overdrive..shifts all others fine up till 4th
Backup lights dont work..im gonna go out now and see if i can take the switch off and clean it b4 I buy another..also replace my backup light fuse...if it turns out not to be the safty switch then im back to square one.

Your CEL Check Engine Light is ON?

Lets try this to check engine codes - the key on off trick -
this is a 97 I am hoping the trick works on your 98 - its to easy to ignore give it a try- if it reports codes copy and post them

My thinking a SWAG is its NOT your NSS.

 

check underhood fuse box fuse #19 a 15 amp.

 

My (SWAG) thinking is the stop lamp switch, this is 3 switches in one, the brake lights, the cruise control and the TCC lock up, lets see if codes gives us a clue.

 

When my 97 would not shift into OD and the reverse lights did not work it was the NSS.
Took it off and cleaned it and was good to go.

It does seem coincidental though if it started after the fuse blew and not being able to connect a code reader to the computer...but as long as you don't break the NSS getting it off it's a free check/fix.

 

Oh forgot...knowbody can hook up code reader to the jeep..something is wrong wont communicate

 

Is the problem with knowbody or the scanner? Auto parts stores like Autozone or Advance scan at no charge

Midnight,still working on my jeep darnit...im begining to think i need new computer...my mothers dodge truck needee one when they couldn't communicate..but! That truck had wrong pc in.it lol so. Idk

Ok review problems

- no reverse lights..fuses are all good, inside and in engine compartment
- engine light on
- does not stay in OD more then 10 secs after turning jeep on/off
- cant communicate with computer for codes
