The Cobra 75 is popular with the JK crowd. Midland has a similar radio the 75-822 and Uniden has the new CMX 560/760.
I don't like the controls in the mic.

I have a Cobra 19 that I throw in the Jeep when I have to and it does fine.

If you go with the Cobra 75 or one of the other compact all in the mic type radios you will probably want an external speaker too as the ones in the mic are very small and can be hard to hear.

It depends on what those you are wheeling with use. I wish more off roaders would move to GMRS, for trail/convoy comms it is much better and the antenna is significantly shorter and can work well mounted almost anywhere as it requires minimal ground plane compared to a CB antenna. It does require a license that will soon be extended to 10 years and one license covers your entire immediate family, you are also allowed up to 50 watts.

FWIW, those VHF "race radios" that are becoming popular in the general off roading community are illegal to use as they are programmed to operate on frequencies that require a license. Race teams and organizers typically hold the licenses for the frequencies used at racing events, but outside of that the same frequency may be used by city/county municipalities or businesses.

You may already know that and it's obviously up to you whether you decide to go that route however the race radio vendors don't make the legalities real obvious and so I am just putting the information out there so others are aware and can make their own decisions based on that info.
