The "Ply Rating" is an equivalent. An E load tire has an equivalent ply rating of a 10 ply tire.

I found this. For newer tires. It appears with many tires going with other style corded radials such as nylon radials, polyester radials in addition to and while getting away from the weight of steel belted radials and improving the tensile strength of the tires that tire companies are able to decrease the amount of layers in a tire while maintaining a high load rating, but rather than saying a tire is 10 plies, they say it is 10 ply rated or "D" rated etc. It is all about saving money in the cost of materials and the drive for car manufacturers to improve fuel mileage by having decreased weight and rotational mass.

    Quick Answer
A load range E tire, used on light trucks and RVs, can have two or three fabric plies or one steel ply. The E rating indicates how much weight the tire can hold based on the strength of 10 fabric plies. Many tire shops still call them E-10 tires.

I used to believe the product reviews I read in Peterson's 4wheel drive, Offroad magazine, etc. Until I started buying the product and trying it out myself. I now believe that the magazines get big dollars to write product reviews. I do like their tech sections and how-to sections though. I used to run BFG ATs, but somewhere in the early 2000s something changed in their product. I started have issues with their carcasses warping on me. I had a dually which 4 of the 6 tires warped after 10000 miles. 4 wheel parts could not get them balanced. They would not warranty them and said I would either have to live with it or purchase 4 new tires. I sold that truck and bought a new truck and put Hankooks on it from Discount and they are the only tires I have run on big trucks ever since.

Nitro makes a good tire. I like the Terra grapplers as an at tire. BFG's are all hype and advertising.

Agreed Nitto makes the best and quietest AT, and they recently gave them some side bite.

My buddy, Will, is running the nitto ridge grapplers and really likes them. I'm considering going with them after I get some cash to replace these BFG's.

Thanks for all the input but I need a mud terrain that can perform well offroad, not a quiet all terrain.

I love my buckshot mudders and wish they made them in the size I need.

I might just wait for the maxxis razr mt which will be available in September. Or get the DC extreme country if I need them sooner than September.

Can anyone compare the DC extreme country to the old DC crushers? The crushers have an amazing reputation. Wonder if the extremes are even better?

It's a headache that tire companies make 99.99% of 17" tires in load range E. Overkill for a Jeep. A freakin forklift uses load range F. That's only 2 ply more than E.
