Just looking for some advice, knowledge and experience about an Eaton Truetrac LSD on a 2 door JK. I’m considering adding one to the rear diff of my 2011 Sport. Currently stock 3.21 open diffs. No hardcore wheeling, mostly seeking to add a little more capability for the times I’m on a forest trail by myself.
Has anyone installed one of these? How does it work for the 90% of the time the Jeep is on pavement?
    Thanks!

I really don’t have any input other than what I’ve watched on YouTube :sorry:

Have you checked any of those out?

Thanks LYFZGOOD, yes, I’ve seen what you tube has to offer - some good resources in general. However, I wondered if anyone on here is actually using a Truetrac, and has any direct experience to share.

Hi everyone, just following up on this - I guess not too many have any Truetrac experiences, lol! Anyway, after a bit more research, I think I’m going to proceed with this - it’s a solution that seems highway friendly, off road capable, and has street cred based on a wide range of reviews from Jeep - Cobra applications. Once I get the parts, and get at it, I’ll post again along with some comments from personal experience. Should be a fun little project. It’ll take me a few weeks - my Jeep isn’t a daily driver and I’m not under a deadline.

Nice...as this mod will take your Jeep up another level of capability and the thread will be interesting to follow. Are you getting it installed or DIY as I have no experience nor local shops I trust. In my mind (not wallet) I've considered purchasing two complete axles professionally built read-to-install with some type of e-locker and 4.88 axle ratio but that will require mucho bucks ;)

I’m undecided whether to do this myself, aggrex. I know what to do, and physically removing the axles, OEM diff and installing the truetrac isn’t difficult. My uncertainty comes with setting up the gear lash and using a dial gauge which I would have to purchase for the project. I might be able to borrow a dial gauge as well, I’m checking that out. I live in a small town, and there’s a guy in the local garage who can do it - they work on every thing in there from back hoes to dump trucks to Jeeps, lol. Either way, I’ll get some photos and let everyone on here know how it ends up! A friend is trying to order the parts for me through his shop which will save some $ so I’m still waiting to see how that goes as well. No rush, but I intend to get it installed for the upcoming trail season, hopefully by mid May.
I’ve thought about buying complete axles too, and I’ve been on the look out for about a year, but nothing has come up. I’m not building a rock crawler, or a dedicated off road vehicle, so I decided to go this route. I mainly want a little more capability for mild trails to access some remote fishing spots, and this should meet my needs and still preserve the nice mostly on highway driveability of my Jeep.

I finally got an Eaton Truetrac LSD installed in the rear axle of my old 2011 JK Sport. In the end, I decided to ask the local mechanic in my small town to install it, as he does diff setups as a regular routine and knows how to set them up. Everything from Kubota's to dump trucks to my Jeep, lol. Although he does drive a Jeep himself, so he's pretty knowledgeable about Jeeps. I was able to get a few photos and got a bit of an education in the process. Bottom line, is that the hellical gears the Eaton Truetrac design is based on is the way to go, imho. I haven't used it off road yet, but I was mostly concerned with civilized daily driving. Its amazing, very smooth and solid. Quiet.
The ring gear back lash spec for the Dana 44 JK is 006" to 010" and as you can see we called it good at 009. The orange marker shows that the pinion pattern is good both sides - there’s a power side and a cruise side. He used a case spreader to get the LSD back into the carrier, I didn't get a photo of that, but its pretty straight forward. There are some good You Tube videos about this product, how LSDs work, and how to set it up, which are better than anything that I can produce, lol. I made this project idiot proof by having a competent mechanic help me, and I'm happy I made that decision. I bought the install kit, which I’d recommend. There were no issues with the install - it was plug and play if you know what to do. A case spreader and a dial gauge are too specialized tools that you’ll need if anyone decides to do this themself. I finished off the project with a new diff cover, and used a gasket instead of silicone to seal it up. No leaks! I'll give you guys a full review of off road performance once I get out on the trails this summer.
