    Hey guys my name is Daniel just had a question to ask. I need to know where you add gear fluid for the CV axle on a 2007 2.4L Jeep Patriot. I was replacing the front driver side strut and the CV axel popped out draining the fluid. So I got the CV axle back in, but need to know where to add the gear fluid. I've looked everywhere online and not a single site tells me where. Thanks in advance

    Welcome! Do you have the manual for it? I'm not sure, but I think it uses the transmission fluid as its one unit. Not sure though.

    Yeah I have the manual but it doesn't say anything about the transmission or CV axle. I thought the same thing but when I went to fill the transmission fluid it was already filled to the max.

    I found this:

    1. If fluid level is low or fluid change is required fill with MOPAR® MS9020 SAE 80W90 Gear Lube until to bottom of fill plug.
    2. Tighten fill plug (1) to 32 N·m (24 ft.lbs.).
    3. Tighten drain plug (2) to 32 N·m (24 ft.lbs.).

    The PTU unit is located on the transaxle. It's bolted in between the passenger front half shaft and the transaxle. Just follow the driveshaft from the RDU to the front.

    Rear Drive Assembly (RDA) Make sure your Jeep is parked on a level surface then crawl under. Pull the fill plug. The fluid should be level with the bottom of the hole( no lower than 1/8 below ). If it is low add some until it is at the correct level.

    To add fluid you squirt some in from a bottle of gear lube using the spout/tip that comes on the bottle. If you can't get the bottle in there to do it get some hose( about 12" long usually does it )that fits over the tip and use the hose inserted in the fiill hole to add fluid.

    I don't see anything in the online manual about how to change it. However, there will either be a drain plug near the bottom of the housing you just pull and let it drain or you will have to pull a cover like a traditional rear axle differential has. My guess on this vehicle is a drain plug but I haven't crawled under to look?

    You have a 4WD so don't forget the fluid in the transfer case( Power Transfer Unit )also needs to be checked for proper level and serviced as well.

    Power Transfer Unit (PTU)

    Same proceedure. Park it level, crawl under, and check using the fill hole. Should be level or no lower than 1/8" below. Fill as needed. There should be a drain plug for servicing.

    For what to use...

    Both the RDA and PTU take 80W90 GL5 rated gear oil. The manual specifies non synthetic. I honestly do not know if that is because all that is needed is regular conventional gear oil OR if there is an issue with synthetics being too slippery? Sometimes you can see units( limited slip, AWD PTU's/RDA's, etc... )that have problems with synthetics because they don't alllow enough friction to work properly. I honestly do not know if synthetic gear oil can be used or not. I plan on writing to Jeep to see before I need to service the RDA and PTU. I prefer to use synthetics where ever possible.

    Note - the owner's manual does not state how much fluid is needed for a service of the PTU or RDA. I looked it up online on an aftermarket site. I don't know how accurate it is but it says...

    RDA = 1.3 Pints
    PTU = 1.1 Pints

    As to when you should service( i.e. change the fluids )the RDA and PTU. It is the same for both standard service( Schedule A )and severe service( Schedule B )..

    Schedule A & B

    RDA = 60,000 miles
    PTU = 60,000 miles

    Thanks chris4x4 but not sure if that applies to mine. The Patriot I have is front wheel drive and not 4x4. Transmission and CV axle are together and located under the engine on the driver side.

    There is a cover you might have to remove:

    Use a 17mm socket to remove the fill plug:

    From what I have found, the Drain plug is a 24mm:

    2013 Jeep Patriot Latitude 2wd
    I bought a 2013 Patriot Latitude fwd for my daughter. While replacing the left front lower control arm, I had the same thing happen to me. Oil went everywhere. I have the same setup as the original poster, so there is no drain plug or fill hole. The oil that spilled out was definitely thicker than the CVT fluid that the dealer provided, even though we spent a good 30 minutes matching up the CVT diagrams for my Jeep. Has anyone come up with a definitive answer for this problem? I don't want to overfill the transmission and burn up my transaxle if the parts guy was wrong, and I feel very insecure about driving under these conditions. Any help is appreciated!!
