75cj 5 with an AMC 360 in it. I was backing out of the garage today and noticed it was idling a bit rough because the dash was rattling pretty noticeably. Drove it into town about 7 miles and it smooths right out when I accelerate but as soon as I stop it’s dash is rattling and it almost sounded like maybe the exhaust bolts or something were loose. I checked everything underneath and all is well. I popped the hood when I got home and noticed that the top of the air filter was laying half off, and I realized the nut must have come loose. I replaced the nut and tightened the filter but the rattle at idle is still there. If the nut dropped into the carb would it smooth out on acceleration and run fine or does this sound like the nut could be in there somewhere?! Im just sick about it. Im hoping I’m missing something else.

Welcome from north central West Virginia :oldglory:

show us some pictures of the air cleaner on the engine I would be surprised if the nut came loose and fell into the carburetor The nut would have just fell off may be down on the engine or on the intake :notsure:

Update! I found the wing nut on top of the intake! I still don’t get why all of sudden I’ve got a death rattle at idle but this is the best news!

death rattle at idle - I am happy to hrar the happy ending on the missing wing nut!
Back to your rattle - fuel wrong octane, vacuum leak (my guess), ignition timing, excess carbon build up.

But not hearing the sound I wonder could it be a ticking ie lifter noise? for that suggest you start with a can of RISOLONE a oil detergent my go to for the sludge varnish isssue.
