Right lift for right rims and tires

Currently have 20 x 10 rims with 285/55/20 33x11.5 tires. Looking to install a 3.5" lift. Just curious to know if anyone has those size rims and tires and the stance looks fine or too much wheel well exposure? at some point want to go to 20x12 rims with 50 wide 35's. Rims and tires brand new and may lose money selling them. Thoughts???

 

Well, welcome to the site. Those are not wheel choices I would EVER make. To each his own. However, wheels aside, with a 3.5" many people will prefer the look of 35s. Don't forget gearing concerns if you are going there.

 

What size rim would you suggest? right now I have 55's and I want to have 50 width tires. I also want a deep lipped rim, dont mind if they stick out from under the fender a bit.

 

I am probably the wrong guy to ask given your wishes. You are apparently looking for a big custom street look and I am into tires/wheels for off-roading.

However, just for the heck of it, here is what I am running....I am running a 315x70r17 tire with an 8" rim and 4.5" backspace. These tires allow me to air down for off-road wheeling without damage to the rims. I was snow wheeling last week with about 5.5 pounds of air in my tires, this would not be safe for the wheels with the sizes you prefer. Even at my normal summer off-road pressure of about 12 pounds, there would be a much greater danger of rim damage.

If the financial gods were looking favorably upon me, I would be running AEV's JK Salta wheels with a 5.2" backspace and an 8.5" width.

Sorry I am no help to you but I have never run such a wheel/tire combo, as you are interested in, on a 4x4 vehicle.

Just for reference Your tires are 285/55/20. Looking at the marked tire above A,B,&C, A = 285 and references the width of the tire which is 285mm wide. B = 55 and references the height of the tire measured from the edge of the wheel to the top of the tire and is measure in a percentage of the width of the tire i.e.: 55% of A (285mm) which is 156.75mm. C = 20 and references the diameter of the rim which is 20 inches.

Some formulas to get the dimensions of the tire.

1in. = 25.4mm

Width of the tire in inches: A = x mm / 25.4mm
EX: 285mm/25.4mm= 11.22 inches wide.

Height (overall) of tire: 2AB/25.4+C
EX: 2 X 285 X 0.55 / 25.4 + 20 = 32.34 inches

 

Now I'm not sure what you are asking for. I realize that you want a wider rim 20X12, and I know the look you want. My question is do you want to stay with the same height tire and just go wider to match the rim? You will have to play with the formulas I posted above to get that. I would think that you need at least a 12.5 in tire designed to run on the 12 in rim to get the look you want.

My thought would be a tire with the size of 315/50R20. This tire is 12.4 inches wide and 32.40 inches tall. You will remain the same height and just be a little wider. No lift needed.

You will have to pay attention to the backspacing (offset) of the wheel. I am not sure about the max backspace you can run, maybe 5 inches. That would be a question for Richard.

If you want to go with the 3.5in lift I believe you could get up to a 37" tire without any other mods. I'm not positive with the 12 in rim though. I ran 37s on my JKU with a 9in beadlocks on a 4in lift. With the same lift I now run 40s, but had to run aftermarket fenders.

 

I think even with 35" tires, of the desired width, more lift will be needed. At full flex such a wide tire is going to rub hard on the stock fenders where a 35x12.5 tire will tuck up into them. I would go with a 4.5" backspace for such a wide tire. So I would think a bit more lift OR flat fenders would be a good idea.
