It sounds like it gets faster as you rev the engine. It sounds like a rod knock from what I’ve read. :( How many miles does it have?

Doesn't quite sound like a rod knocking . Take the Inspection plate off and turn the engine by hand to check the flywheel. It could be a rod knocking or piston slap . It just seems to fast. My wife's 4runner has a rod knocking . That's why it's been parked for 2 years.

It has a weird hollow sound maybe more like piston slap. Either way it ain't good . Did you run it low on oil? Have you been very high reving it?

Also welcome from Texas . Don't sweat man if it has a 4.0 there are lots of them in wrecking yards at a reasonable price. Xj,yj,and tj used that motor I believe. The ones before 03 had problems with inferior materials in the pistons. A lot of them the skirts cracked . I think there might have even been a recall.

Yeah I had some lifter noise the other day. Changed the oil and it went away. I was scared it was something serious but it sounds like common problem on these engines. It sounded nothing like this though.

Welcome @Krisryanl i've been fortunate not to experience such a distinct sharp metallic tap from the engine. My guess is a collapsed valve contacting the piston. It's definitely not a good sound and probably won't end well.

With careful use of a stethoscope, a suspicious noise location can be detected.
