Clunking sound from front of Grand Cherokee

    I have a 02 grand cherokee 4x4 4.0 and it has a dragging clunking sound coming from the front it makes it all the time but louder in 4x4 any ideas why

    I was thinking drive shaft, transfer case or maybe just U joints but wanted to see if anyone might have any ideas before i start replacing parts

    It can be any of the above and a few more. As well, sounds, knocks and vibrations have a habit of traveling and sounding like they are coming from one direction when they are actually from the other. However, it getting worse in 4wd narrows it a bit. If you are wealthy, I guess you can just start replacing parts as you stated but, I would just start checking to see what is actually wrong....and replace that.

    Start with fluids (Axle and Transfer case) Then, check the U-joints on the axles and the front drive shaft.

    Just my 2cents.....

    Just bought 05 Cherokee I'm having the same problem,funny thing is you have to drive for about 45 min.before it starts. Running 55 on straight smooth road every few min.you hear a thump just like the joints on a concrete road or bridge. It also makes the same noise when you press the brakes. I've even got a grinding/clicking noise when you turn to the left. All this noise sounds like front drivers side,strange thing is if you stay close to home and only drive 30 miles it sounds like a brand new one lol
