New to the group here. I recently bought a 2000 GC Laredo. It's a 4.0 motor with select track. 4 wheel drive will not engage. When I try to put it in, it jumps and then nothing. When I try to put it in while in drive, it grinds really hard. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I hate to say it but it sounds like you have a bad transfer case. I would check the fluid for level and metal content. You can always lift the front end off the ground and spin both your front tires to make sure you don’t have a broken axle? That transfer case is shift on the fly so if you have a good fluid level it should not grind meaning it’s probably no good. Hope that helps

Concur with @SmittyJeeper on the transfer case. Check linkages and perform a fluid replacement as it could be due to t/c fluid volume and/or correct type of t/c fluid. Since you just acquired the jeep I will assume the grinding just started and hopefully little to no further damage has occurred.

I am going to put it up in the air tomorrow and check axle and make sure linkage is properly adjusted. And change fluid. Thank you guys for your knowledge. It is greatly appreciated
