Driving yesterday on city street when ‘82 CJ-7 started slowing as if not getting enough fuel. Stalled. Very jumpy.. Now won’t drive forward or reverse. Any insight? Thanks!

Welcome @Handel24 ...kept up with maintenance, right? Problem could be a number of different things so try isolating the basics needed to run. Start with fuel in the tank, fuel filter, pump etc. then move towards spark, ignition, etc. Also the engine needs to breathe

    Hello Jordan.
    Does it run?
    Manual or Auto trans?

Thanks for reply. Manual trans and engine runs well. Just Locked up on me and wont engage in gear forward or reverse. I noticed someone on the road point to my front passenger tire or front section of Jeep. It then started to sputter and died.

If you put it in 1st, press the clutch, start the engine, and then let off the clutch will it go?
Won't go into gear sounds like a clutch issue.
If you won't go into gear even with the engine off.....that sounds like an internal trans issue.

Thanks for the reply. I can put into gear, engine sounds fine, then when I release clutch partially in first, second or reverse it wont accelerate. No off noises...just wont go. Sorry...not a very technical automotive guru.

I have heard of issues like this before, if I understand you correctly Handel. The problem was that the transfer case slipped out of gear.

Let us know if the transfer case is in gear. That’s what it sounds like to me.

Thanks for your reply; not the most savvy with mechanical issues...so apologies for the question, but how do I get transfer case back in gear?

See if it will go in with the engine at idle and the transmission in neutral.

I don't think this applies to the issue under discussion (my Glad' is an auto), but it is somewhat related and an issue I hadn't heard of until it happened to me:

I had just been wiping down the dash and decided to turn the Glad' around in the driveway. It started fine and when I shifted it into Drive, it would not move. I checked to ensure I had released the parking brake, as expected,it was off, at that time I got some kind of error message on the screen saying "auto-park not released, shift into P and then back t D to reset." so I did that (even though I had never heard of Auto-Park). I tried Reverse too, no go there either, the engine just spun. Then I fastened my seatbelt and everything started working as normal. Is this a "rule" to force seatbelt use? No one ever told me about that, and I couldn't find it in the user's manual either. I've tested the seat belt since then and I didn't need to fasten it to drive away, so I don't know if it was a poor connector mate, oer some other issue or not. In the meantime I will continue to drive as I do with all my other vehicles and wait for a recurrence.

    Slothead Tom
