Jeep xj Motor swap (non California emissions motor with California emissions harness)

Hello Everyone.
I joined this forum hoping to get some info regarding my xj motor swap.
I recently just put a motor and exhaust from a 97 Cherokee into a 2000 Cherokee Xj. my problem is that the 2000 Cherokee has a harness that requires 4 O2 sensors
(Cali emissions) but with my 97 motor and exhaust has 2. The truck runs great but I have the 2 codes popping up for those O2's. I know that I can weld in 2 bungs and install the sensors, but I just wanted to know if doing that will definitely clear the codes and if so Do they Have to be installed in the manifold itself or just in the exhaust before the cat? Any info would be Greatly appreciated and also I apologize if this is confusing or in the wrong thread!

Welcome @GreenMachine2000 ...good engine update for the XJ. If your wire harness requires 4 O2 sensors then the CPU is looking for info from them. Try to get a diagram for the location of the O2 sensors that meet CA standards.

 

Thank you for the welcome! I did look at the diagram for the original exhaust setup. There were 2 sensors pre cat and 2 after the cat. Also the exhaust manifold it originally had, had 2 separate manifolds (for 2000 xj) rather than the single manifold I have now (for 97 xj) And the 2 pre cat sensors were located in each manifold by the flange (for 2000 xj) I was wondering if I can locate the 2 bungs and sensors into the new single manifold I have now to clear the 02 codes that I currently have.

 

Never had to deal with CA smog rules that may not apply to your project but just wondering whether exhaust data could be provided to the 2 additional O2 wires (splice) before welding in a pair of bungs.

 

You know, I have thought about this as well. It would be great if it was that simple Lol

 

Am I missing something, sounds simple - switch to the 2000 exhaust manifold with the mini cats, then the system will have the correct configuration.

The emissions will need to be the 2000 specifications, IIRC CUOMO land requires California specs.

 

The 97 head differs from the 2000. I'd have to swap out heads for that but my 97 head is pretty new

 

Am I reading this correct -
the vehicle is a 2000xj with the 2 mini cats.

You did not use the 2000xj intake or exhaust you claim it will not 'fit' the 97 head?
the 97 down pipe and cat were used?

Am I correct that you have emission testing in NYS?

Maybe MAYBE having 2 precat sensors different distance from cat and 2 post cat sensors again slightly different distance past cat will work.... BUT I am wondering WHY you did not address when engine was out of vehicle...

Unfortunately this is my first jeep build so I am still learning. I apologize for any confusion. Correct, It is the motor and exhaust from a 97. The 2000 originally had the 2 mini cats. IF I were to go back to the original setup, I would have to swap heads to work with the Cali emissions exhaust because the port sizes are different from 97-2000. Currently I have 1 sensor in the downpipe and I after the cat leaving me to blank 02 plugs in the 2000 wiring harness.A the intake manifold is off of a 2000 4.0. (figure I'd use this instead of my 97 intake just because I read that the later model intakes are somewhat better) And yes there is emission testing in NY. Again, I am sorry that I am all over the place with this lol.

So that being said, do you think installing 2 bungs in the exhaust manifold would clear up my codes?

Try the bung holes as mentioned in above post - fingers crossed

use correct sensors, jeep or NTK brands only - period.
Record all codes and freeze frame info. then clear codes (press button duh) AND remove the neg battery cable - this will clear any o2 sensor history less likely to code - let us know after drive cycle if monitors set and if any codes.

 

Bungs welded in, cleared the codes. So far so good. Jeep goes on the road this week since motor swap ohh yeaa
