So after taking a couple long over 100 mile trips we itm my 79 CJ7 304 with a Holley performance carburetor, it started idling at 1500 rpm most of the time. I checked for vacuum leaks and didnt fine any at all. However I did notice the throttle linkage isn't reaching the idle screw. And I can pull back on it and CV the idle will decrease and go back to normal. But once I release it itll jump back up. I tried loving it and cleaning it. Nothing is keeping it from going to it's normal idle postion. Nothing is binding on the outside of the carb anyways. Any ideas? Really dont want to drive it if its holding at 1400+at a traffic light. Side pipes....

You could try disconnecting the throttle linkage and starting it up. This of course will determine if it is a throttle linkage issue or carb issue.

Good idea. I did that and no change to the idle. And I dont believe is the spring weakening. It takes a couple pounds of force to pull on the throttle to make it reduce in rpms...

Well, you have to start with the simple stuff first. Look down the throat of the carb and check for a full closure, there could even be something that a spray carb cleaner could remove. Or, anywhere in the carb return linkage, on both sides. Somewhere you are getting excessive air, like from a vacuum leak.

I found my issue. The red fast idle cam is sticking. So when I rev it itll stay at high rpms like it would if it was a cold engine. Using my finger I can push down the fast idle cam and it returns my idle to normal. Until I rev it again. And once I do push it down. There is no play in the linkage

No play in the linkage? Any nuts or bolts that are holding it on that can be loosened. There might be something under the gas pedal that can be altered or even at the other end near the carb linkage. Or even at the linkage itself. Is the a choke adjustment on the carb? Can you adjust whatever actuates the choke on a cold engine? It has been well over a decade or two since I had a carb to play with.
