My jeep sat in garage the winter and drained the battery. I jumped it off than discovered a check engine code p1692 witch is failure to communicate with instrument cluster, and speedometer does not work. Everything else works just as before the jump off. The odometer works and the cruise works. I have replaced the instrument cluster and ECM still have same problem. Took it to my local shop and he hooked it to his scanner and we drove around and he could read the speed on the scanner. I have checked every fuse in both fuse box and the 3 wires going to the speed sensor for continuity all checked good. I have seen this problem posted on forums but no one has had a solution. The ECM I purchased was remanufactured and programed to my jeep. Is it possible I got a defective one that still gives me the same problem and code p1692. Thanks for any help.

Will your scanner read other modules I suspect there are 'U' series and likely 'B' series codes...
Not often accessible with non professional scanners.

Did you repair change modify add ANYTHING on jeep?

I have returned the remanufactured ECM and installed the original as well as the original instrument cluster. I have made no changes at all to the jeep just jumped it off. When I jumped it off the first time I tried the connection was bad and it made the solenoid switch click loudly and gauges sweep violently back and forth I think this caused my problem. The scanner the shop used was a Snap On scanner I don't know if it can get those codes but the only one was p1692 and he said it was a hard code meaning that he can't clear it. Thanks for the welcome!

    Good scanner-
Sorry I gotta ask about scanner, professional ones are expensive.

I will attach a trouble tree likely you will need to program modules IPM - Welcome to the world of computers.
Wish I could offer a work around, :(

Can I help with anything else?

@Raptor59 I see your Wrangler is a Rubicon as well, I am wondering if you have used a superchips to program your Jeep? This CEL popped up on my Rubicon a month or so after I installed a superchip tune, this didn’t hit me until I just noticed someone else with the same CEL code listed a SC in their mod list.

all you need to do is reprogram the modules/PCM.

NO NO NO What is this need a PCM mantra?

See your friendly local jeep dealer, all that is needed is a 'reboot' a 'reflash' reprogramming.

suggest you remove the POS programmer before taking it in. Just say vehicle was stored with battery removed.

    Let us know outcome.

I have the same problem following the battery disconnect to install the Banks stuff last week by my local shop. Thought it may have been a Banks issue at first, still not sure about that, will follow up next week with them. The shop spent an hour on the phone with Banks on Tuesday with more questions than answers.
BUT, after taking it in to the dealer I bought the Jeep from and the service writer had a similar issue with his personal 03 Rubi. I asked them to reflash the ECM. He didn't think it would do any good and it turns out he was right, No change, CEL still on and the speedo is still dead.
The service writer said he replaced the gauges with S-W and got a small module that mimicked the old speedo at 4 Wheel Parts locally (no longer available, he checked today) to tell the ECM that the speedo was there. He was sympathetic, having spent some $3000 plus dollars altogether chasing down a solution for his!

Thank you, found this thread on a search for the p1692 code, ROF also has a thread going on this.Tigman is on it too.
The service writer said he thinks these problems are related to ageing wiring as well as us tinkerers fooling around. Also said no factory parts available now, only aftermarket ECMs and recycled speedo units. Maybe this will force us to do the
Syked ECU Tuning Software (for 97-04 TJs)
thing. From the Wrangler TJ forum.
