Greetings from a newbie member but an old jeeper (both in age and years owning jeeps).
    Currently restoring (ground-up, full stock) my grandfather’s ‘61 cj5. Also have a ‘57 cj5 that I want to re-power and a ‘77 Cherokee 4 door with a straight 6. Way back, I also had a mid 50’s wagon and an early 50’s pickup.
My current dilemma is wether or not to part out the 77 Cherokee to re-power the ‘57CJ ( it is sans motor currently) and sell other parts (primarily the axels) to help fund the restoration.

Looking forward to some sage advice from the “old guard” members. Cheers!

Welcome @Grampswillys the jeep project is an impressive plan. Are you doing the heavy work or outsourcing? Will the straight 6 fit without major mods? Is the 77 restoreable? Selling body parts (not yours) and axles might make sense to reduce expenses.

Thanks for your reply! Yep doin’ everything myself. The 77 has some fairly heavy rust issues (rockers and first floor section inboard from rockers, as well as under tailgate and rear corner supports) but runs great (I rebuilt the top end) and it drives really well too. I’m afraid the body may be too far gone. Hahaha, yeah my body parts wouldn’t bring-in much, might go negative on that one!
Not sure on the engine/tranny swap, haven’t been able to find much info on it yet. The ‘57 apparently had a pinto engine swap and then someone cut that out before I acquired it. Someone suggested a 3.2ltr out of a ford ranger, but I haven’t researched that yet.

    Welcome from Oklahoma.
If the Cherokee body was in better shape it would be sad to have it parted out but as it is it would be a good candidate for a drive train swap.
