RECOVERY TIPS AND TECHNIQUES

New to the site. Great read especially with the video. Thanks for the info. Now one more tool to add. Much appreciated.

Your doing what I did when I signed on here. Searching threw old posts. I learned so much here. As your seeing. A bunch of awesome knowledgeable members here. And, the posts are great reads. Great to have ya here offroad. Already adding to our growing community.

 

What NOT to do.

Most of the time, when off-roading, don't spin your wheels like you are drag racing.

If you get stuck, the worst thing you can do is put your foot down on the accelerator. Ironically, this is, more often than not, the first thing people new to wheeling do when they get stuck. If your wheels turn and you don't move forward, you are going to sink and just bog down even more. The longer you stay on the gas, the deeper your hole gets, and the harder it is to be recovered.

This is the same as when you are being recovered. A gentle turn of the wheels is a good idea as it helps to pop you back onto the surface, but there's no need to have your car bouncing off the rev limiter! In snow or soft sand, it is sometimes better to not touch the gas at all and just allow your rig to roll back on top again.

When off-roading (not the same as mud bogging for our purpose here) a gentle touch will win the day much more often than stomping on the gas.

 

What not to do:

This has been in the news a lot more recently, but people still seem to think it is ok to throw a snatch strap over the tow ball when recovering a stuck 4WD. Tow balls are not designed for the stresses a snatch strap or winch can put on them. Actually, they are very brittle. If you snatch off a tow ball, it is likely to shear off, and go flying through the air like a cannonball.

A piece of metal like that, flying as quickly as it can, has the potential to kill and has done so in the past. In one example, a lady was killed while recovering a stuck 4WD in deep sand. The tow ball broke off the stuck vehicle and flew through the front window of the recovery rig and killed the driver. Such a tragedy and she was only trying to help out.

Please don't use tow balls for recoveries.

 

What brand of tow straps do you guys recommend. Some cheap ones on Amazon but I've noticed you usually get what you pay for in straps I have 100' of really good strap and 100' of I bought it cheap on Amazon I dunno about it

 

I have personally seen this go badly ...it went thru my back window and lodged in my windshield 1 foot right of my head . Would have killed me no doubt. It sounded like a gun going off.

 

Pull the stinger and use the hitch pin if you have to use the hitch as a recovery point.

 

Bubba Rope and soft shackles sized for the Jeep are part of my recovery gear.

If my wife finds this hiding under the table in my office I'm in serious trouble lol I told her I spent 500 on the lift ....well that was true before I added wheel bearing hubs moog ball joints adjustable track bars sway bar disconnects new steering stabilizer ...... You get the picture.

 

I forget what brand at the moment. But I carry a 20k lb strap also.
