Hi all, I'm new to the group but not to jeeps. I presently am trying to chase down a noise thats driving me nuts. 08 sahara 90k miles 6 speed.
Ive got a crazy metal on metal sound underneath the rig. As best I can tell its no where near wheels, rear or front. Seems right under the drivers seat. When stopped and taking off in 1st is when it appears. level ground or incline doesnt matter.
It would be the sound of contorting metal, or metal on metal moving.
Ive looked under neath and I dont see anything crazy and evident.
Jeep spent its life until coming to me in canada so I first thought rust, but nothing unusual.
Tie rod needs bushings but no rub marks.
Body mounts have bushing rubber thats not the best, and only between body and frame. Bolts long under frame, makes you think a bushing is missing but no rub marks....ideas??

My first guess what the exhaust rubbing on something like a cross member, broken exhaust hanger, tranmission/tcase, etc.
When you accelerate the engine torques which causes the exhaust to move. It may not look evident when crawling underneath as it may appear the exhaust isn't touching anything.
Maybe time for some new engine/trans mounts.

Welcome @2008jkdean a few of my vehicles had the heat shields around the cat rattling. Check under the jeep thoroughly before giving up. Could simply be loose exhaust as already mentioned or slightly worse like the mounts.

If it’s in first gear and stops after getting a good roll, I would guess it’s a ujoint on your drive shaft. If the joint isn’t tight you can get a clanky metal sound when it starts it’s roatation because it won’t be spinning in a perfect circle, once speed is reached physics takes over and spins normally.

Just a possibility and very easy to check. Jack up the back end and spin the drive shaft and see if you have too much play in the joint.
