Welcome to the site! Mpg sounds a bit low. I would start with the basics. Spark plug change, air filter, and clean the throttle body, and mass air sensor.

Welcome! The 5.2 in the GC makes for a swift SUV that was rated for 14/18 mpg. Some of the GC had full-time 4WD systems but adding to chris4x4 suggestions based on the age checkout any brake drag, tires, alignment etc. Perhaps you're tapping into the 220HP a bit much.

    Any check engine light?

A bad Oxygen sensor could cause poor gas mileage.

Welcome to the forum @98zj. Yeah agreed 9 mpg is some what umm, not good.
A bunch of great advice mentioned above. All I can add. Have you made any drastic changes such as bigger tires? What's your rpms as say 65 mph? At what point rpm wise, is your tranny shifting gears? Just my experiences is why I ask.
I'm sure we can help you figure this out. You came to the right plave.
