I replaced my fuel pump and several hoses on my Cj, but for some reason it takes quite a few cranks for the engine to start, and then it idles really low and dies if I don’t hold on the throttle a bit. Then eventually it catches and idles normally. What might it be?

Humm. New pump and lines. Filter comes to mind. But doubt that's the issue. OFFGRID is probably our most knowledgeable CJ member. Peter......you out there???? Hang tight Matt.

Are you running the factory carb? Did the jeep sit up for a long period of time without being run?

Motorcraft 2150 swap, has like 500 miles on it, and the carb sat off the engine for a few months as I rebuilt the block. I haven’t checked anything with the carb yet. I’ll start there

Remove the top housing on the carburetor observe the position of the float and the level of fuel in the carburetor prior to attempting to start it. It could be something as simple as your fuel is boiling out of the carb and the crank is necessary to reprime the Bowl. It could also be something to do with your power valve to where the fuel is leaking out of the bowl and again you need to replenish the bowl level prior to starting. As for it idling really slow when it starts and then later leveling out that is normally one of two things. First it could be an improperly adjusted choke. Second you could have a vacuum leak that is stabilizing out as things warm and expand. You can check for that by taking a can of brake clean or similar product and spraying around the base of the carburetor and any other obvious position where vacuum maybe leaking and see if You observe a change in the motors Behavior or idle speeds.
