Yeah.....agreed. Nice rig Blue Baby. Noticed your inners too. Are they ACE or Fishbone? I have Fishbone front and rear I'm installing this weekend. I like the fact that there's no Brand name on them. Just holes. Lolll.

Thanks, they're the ACE liners. I'll have to check out Fishbone, haven't seen them yet.

Their basically the same liners. Aluminum, powder coated. Same coverage. But much cheaper. The 4 piece set 350 which i picked up at 300. But, I like the fact they don't have their initials laser cut in them. Wanted just plain old linners. ACE makes a nice set too. I like the Fishbone cause they come as a set. Front and rear. Easy install too.

Rear pinion is toast...... Was pulling on to the highway, a block later and BAM! Not knowing what it was I pulled over, inspected everything I could see then continued to drive. No noise the rest of the way to work, but on the way home it start to make a constant clunk. Gears have been in there for 3 years with a pretty good amount of wheeling on them.

Makes me happy I stuck a D60 in the back of the new one

    LOL

Inside the differential there are 2 parts that make up the "gears", the ring and the pinion. (pic below)
The pinion gear attaches to your drive shaft and spins the ring gear.

I know what/how it works, its just not a common issue. What do you think caused it?

Sorry :) I didn't know your level of techygoobyness :)

No idea. My son was going to work with me that day and we were talking when it happened. Not even doing something stupid, at least then I'd understand...???...???...??? Maybe it was fractured on the last trip and decided to give way, dunno :notsure:

Well.....I have a decent basic grasp of how things work. Ive rebuilt a few engines, and completely built a Hit/miss engine, with a friend, while only having to buy fluids, wire, and a spark plug. Machined everything ourselves :) I gots the tools, another buddy has a full machine shop in his garage, and another friend knows welding and fab. Between the 3 of us, we can pretty much ruin anything.

I helped a friend do his gears, that taught me enough to know it's over my pay grade....

Chris4x4, I can do that all by myself. And even more damage with help from my friends. - LOL

So here's a pic of the damaged pinion gear, not too much damage on the ring.
We tossed around several theories of what might have happened, but we're not really sure. Anyways, re-did the seals on the rear axle shafts (Revolution) while they were out along with new bearings, etc.

Gear break-in is always fun..... :D

Looks like too much force on the edge of the teeth, maybe the pinion was set too shallow. Sorry that happened. This repair is a lot of work.

Reading some of what preceded your breakage, It broke under very little stress, but That is not likely. Looking at the scoring on the pinion where the pinion sits, it almost looks like the bearing was seizing up. This would put stress on the ring and pinion. Not sure what would cause this other than excessive heat and or maybe the pinion load was set too heavy.
