I am a Jeep mom to 2002 Sahara that my daughter drives. She is away at college and we are having an issue I can't help her with because I am not there to "examine" the situation.
new Texas law - 3rd brake light must be present and working to get inspection. Original owner removed it to make room for larger spare. We are working on a deadline to get it replaced as she got a ticket for not having her inspection. I can find tons of aftermarket alternatives that she can easily add and go get her inspection, but what I don't know is what kind of connection is on her jeep or if the original owner just cut the wires (surely not!)
She sent me the attached photo, but I'm not sure that is the correct connection because nothing I have found aftermarket looks like this.
Can someone tell me what this connection may go to and what the connection for the third brake light actually looks like? Then mom can do her job - order the brake light have it shipped to her and she can get out of her ticket. THANKS!

Welcome to the site! That looks like a connection to one of the rear lights, but I'm not that familiar with that year.

I actually wouldn't be surprised if they cut the harness rather than fishing it out of the tailgate.

If she is around the DFW area and has facebook she may look at joining North Texas Jeep Club and posting her predicament there. I am sure someone(s) would be willing to help her either wire up an aftermarket 3rd brake light or may have a stock one laying around they would let her have.

Also if you don't mine me asking where abouts are you located?

ok - so we have discovered that the wiring is for sure missing so we are going with a trailer hitch light and just connect to her trailer lights. However I have one other question can anyone tell me what this connection above the hitch is for?

Looks like the lights used when the jeep is being towed behind an RV

There is a conn in the door. You can see if they just pushed it in the door. Otherwise you will have to splice the wires. Try mechanical fingers or a coat hanger to reach wiring harness. Just take your time when using coat hanger. Good luck

They are both trailer brakes 4pin round and 4pin flat, used for pulling light trailers without brakes. The round could possibly be specific to U-Haul trailers only, you won't know till you plug into it and see if all of your lights work correctly namely left blinks when left blinker is on and visa versa. You can use either for powering a brake light.
