CJ5 won't crank after new control module installed

    My ignition control module is getting so hot that it's melting. The jeep still cranks and runs, but I ordered a new module anyways. When I installed the new part I could not get the jeep to crank. Could this just be a grounding problem or what? Oh I have a 1975 cj5.

    Best thing I ever did was junk the Ford ICM, coil, and distributor that AMC used in the cj, and replaced it with a HEI distributor. This is what I suggest you do, but if you want to keep your set up we need more information. What to you mean by won't crank? Will it turn over, but not start, Or when you turn the key nothing happens?

    I'm subbed. I have no idea what your issue might be.
    But I constantly learn from OFFGRID. Another learning thread for sure. :)

    I will check into that setup but money and time wise I'll have to stick with this for right now but yes it will turn over just not start.

    Turning over and not starting is spark, or fuel. Probably not the CM, but a coil or the electronics of the distributor if it is a spark issue. If not it is likely the fuel pump.

    That's what I was thinking but it cranks with the old cm just not the new one is what has me confused

    Have you put the old one back in to see if it will start. Where is it melting? The under side? Mine did the same thing. They all get hot. That gel just gets old and sort of comes apart. I think I paid less than $100 for my HEI on eBay. Fixed all my ignition problems.

    Yeah it's the underside the black gel that's melting and I put the old one back in and it started right up

    Sounds like The new one is a faulty CM.
