TJ suddenly went into neutral and now won't move

I have a 2001 wrangler sport automatic...,was going down the road and all of a sudden jeep just went into neutral...no noises or problems before as it was doing fine....will not do anything now in any gear even putting in 4 wheel drive....had just driven 220 miles 2 days before with no problems...appreciate your opinions....thanks

 

Welcome! Based on your description you probably needed a tow back home or to the shop. Low on fluid or loss of fluid or AT overheated or lack of AT routine maintenance? MY GC AT did me a favor one morning by failing in the driveway as opposed to on-the-road. Turned out it needed AT replacement. Have the trans checked out.

 

has fluid...fluid color looks fine..never heard of a transmission just going out instantly without showing some kinds of signs

 

Have you had your trans serviced lately? Look and see if your shift cable popped off underneath

 

I have never had it serviced...I have had it about 6 years

 

2 things I think first of . Cause I had them happen. No fluid, bad cable. If fluid is good. Very good chance it's the cable. Your 200 plus miles may have just did you in. And there's never any warning with the cable. Fluid, yes, there usually is warning signs. But the cable could just quit. Curious as to what you find.

 

If it's not the cable you can do a pan drop and see what the inside looks like. I've found a few vehicles with the same complaint and the internal filter was petrified/completely plugged and it wasn't allowing fluid through it. In other words it was starving the transmission giving it that neutral feeling. Auto transmission should be services every 30k depending on use so 6 years is a long time.
