The 79 CJ7 I got doesn't want to take fuel at the pump. It takes forever to get a coupla gallons in. It has the optional 20gal plastic tank. The fill hose looks fine, if kinda small. This normal?

Welcome! Check to see if there are any blockages or kinks in the fill hose connection to the tank.

Welcome! Hang tight because there are plenty of CJ owners on this forum that can probably help with this issue. Maybe not related but a locking gas cap may prevent simple stupid vandalism.

Welcome Fitster. I have a JK now but had a CJ7 in the past. When pumping in, the air needs a place to come back out. Make sure the airline or hole is clear. It will stop pumping quick if the pressure can't escape.

Definitely check your hoses from the tank to the filler. Many times people replace them with straight hose and bend it. You should have 2 hoses, a big filler and a smaller bent hose. This will cause your symptoms. If you need to, order the correct hoses from quadratec or Morris 4x4 or the like. They are L shaped. Having an after market tank the factory hoses may have been too short. Use the factory hoses and extend them using copper plumbing pipe and hose clamps if needed. Dealing with PO's jerry rigging can be a nightmare.

What OFFGRID said and previous posters. Air needs to escape. And In most cases, it's not your fault. It's an issue the PO created. Trace your lines and patience will be your friend. Good luck dude.

Thanks everyone. I took the tank out (stock factory option) and the hoses were clear, but weird. The fill hose has adapters at the fill and then the tank with a larger hose between,??? From the replies, I guess it isn't normal, so I've ordered stock hoses and hopefully that will correct the situation. Then time to move on to the ARB lockers that have been disabled.

Well, put the tank back in with new hoses, being sure there were no kinks or weird stuff, it takes gas, but VERY slowly. Won't even go to the first click on the gas pump. But I guess it is what it is.

That is still not normal. The tank should have another vent hose on the driver side going up to a charcoal cannister under the hood. I have disconnected mine and plugged it and I can still fill as fast as the pump will go. Maybe the vent at the filler is restricted. If you get bored disconnect the smaller hose and see if you can easily blow into it. I have never heard of a factory option for a 20gal tank, but that is not to say there weren't any. I have only seen aftermarket poly gas tanks. If yours was metal it likely is original. I will say that the nozzle makes a difference. Here in Texas we used to have a these reclaiming nozzles that would reclaim the gas fumes that came from the tank. My CJ did not like those and I would have to pump very slowly to fill it up. Now we have gone back to the old style nozzle from the 70s and it works great. Good luck.

All the hoses are new. I think you're right about the nozzles, I'm just up here in La Grange and we still have the funky new nozzles. Maybe I'll try one of the old stations in town.

Hey you are close. I go through there all of the time to see my parents in Burnett and stop by Hidden Falls. That area close to you on Highway 71 with the 2 gas stations where is slows down to 55. The shell has the old back to new nozzles.

Well as it turns out, that Shell station is where I got it to take a little fuel, however slowly. But I just tried the new Murphy's at the Super Wally and it would stay filling using the first click on the pump handle and shut off when full!! So I'm happy. Guess it is a pump handle thing.
