My 3.8 manual says 5w-20, but I use 5w-30 in it. The motor has 77,000km (47,847 miles in US) on it. It has good compression and doesn’t burn any oil. I’ve read that Chrysler specified 5w-20 for CAFE reasons, and weren’t worried about longevity. Their goal is to sell vehicles and meet the regulatory hurdles. It’s only a slight bit heavier, but I believe the engine is happier with 5w-30, especially in the summer.
I’m not a partisan when it comes to oil, and I try to follow the science. But the 5w-30 I use is Castrol, full synthetic. I buy it whenever it comes up on sale at 1/2 price at Canadian Tire.

I agree. Specs say 5 - 20. But now that I have 115k on my 2016 JK. I'm moving up to 5 - 30. It won't hurt motor, especially in the summer months. I've been running full synthetic since day one when I changed oil day after I bought it.

Lol, you can get them on line, they’re free. If you want an OEM printed copy in the Jeep canvas folder, they’re on eBay.

Hey @tomrr i know I said this before but this is another opportunity to post my 2011, since it’s a sister Jeep to yours. Although, mine is slightly more archaic with the 3.8. Btw, which I quite like. At least mine doesn’t have any of the faults attributed to other 3.8s yet. Lol.
Red is a cool colour, eh? Lol.859CA03B-080E-48EA-87C9-D2A6366F0363.jpg

I am not really one way or the other about the motors, Have heard PRO/CONS about both!! I had a one owner 2006 TJ with 23000 miles on it. Long story short gave it to my Son when he was in need of something to get around. I looked for another TJ but very hard to find one any where near as nice Has the one I had. This Is and old pic. Was lucky to find a one owner 2012 JK with 50000 miles on it. And of course had to Pay up for it !!!!! 202.jpg

@tomrr low mileage Jeeps are hard to find - I was lucky to find mine with ~47000 miles on it as well. Great you were able to help your son too. My grandsons out west already have dibs on my 2011 when they get a bit older, lol.
