So have a broken spring on my xj. 2 questions should I do both sides at once? (Feel like that's stupid to ask) and 2 be better to have a shop do it?

Leaf spring? That's not too uncommon.
You might be able to get away with only doing one side if you used a used leaf pack, but that pack may not be as worn or may be more worn than yours and cause it to not sit level.
If you went with only one new pack it would definitely side lop sided.
Sounds like the time to go ahead and lift it..

It was going to happen eventually but now it's going to happen sooner then later since i need springs all around. How hard is it to change the spring by my self when I get the lift?

I have seen quite a few springs break, mostly leaf packs, including my own. A good option for replacement would be a custom spring shop, if you have one local. Or you can consider an upgrade purchasing springs from one of the big box 4wd outfits, and yes replace both.

A good set of sockets and breaker bars helps.
You can rent the widow makers....errr... I mean coil spring compressors from the auto parts store.
If you can get the Jeep up high enough and disconnect everything on the steering and suspension except for the control arms you can slowly drop the axle down (without the tires on) and the springs will fall out.
Getting the longer springs in may be a bit more work, with the extended bump stops I would not put the lift coils in the way I took the old ones out and at that point had to use the compressors. Get the strut compressors as they go on the outside of the coil.

When i lifted my XJ. I used a set of ummmm......widow makers. :(. And I know the history of these diabolical devices. So I took every precaution. Even wore a baseball catchers mask.. First one....no issue. Second one. If it was pointing in my direction. I'd be in a "How not" You Tube. And id have like 3 teeth left. It shot a good 30 feet out of my hands. Was kinda cool thou......
