Speedometer and radio issue

so i finally got back into a jeep. i just picked up a yj. the only problems wrong with it are the speedometer/odometer gauge doesn't work, we tested the ohms on the wires at the speed sensor and they checked out ok. next thing to do it maybe buy a new sensor and gear for it unless someone tells me i may have a different issue? next up is the radio. it is the original stock radio, wont even turn on, cant really find the fuse for it besides the one actually labeled radio under the drivers side dash, however...it looks like a 1 prong fuse and nothing is there so i don't think that would be it. does anyone have any ideas for my issues? thanks. cant wait to fix these and move on to mods and wheeling again.

 

Turn ignition switch to run. Inspect fuse #7, replace if bad. 2) Measure voltage at battery side of fuse7. There should be battery voltage (12 volts). if not repair open from ign switch. 3) Inspect in-line fuse on back of radio near conn. Replace if necessary. 4)Turn ignition off. Measure resistance from radio ground pin to clean chassis ground. If not repair open between radio conn and ground. If all checks are good, radio is bad. You can check radio out of vehicle to make sure. Note in-line fuse will blow in event of internal short.

 

Disconnect speed sensor. 2) connect a voltmeter the black wire pin of the connector and ground. 3) turn ignition to run position. Check for approximately 5 volts. If good run speed sensor test. If not good turn ignition sw off. 4) Check continuity between speed sensor and terminal 13 of instrument cluster connector. If ok, replace speedometer, if not repair open circuit. You can check the speed sensor off the vechicle just type in test vechicle speed sensor for XXXX year jeep yj. Good luck

 

Thank you. I'll get this checked when I can. The odometer is apparently not working as well so Im leaning towards a bad gauge or faulty wire more than anything. As for the radio, it's just shot, I have 12 volts ignition off and on. So I'll just replace that and put in a sound bar with it.

mike456 glad it helped. The speedometer/odometer are tied together. The signal is sent from v.s.s to the speedometer/odometer circuity through the harness. So they both work or they don't. Good luck

 

My speedometer and odometer dont work either. However, I'm chalking that up to the fact that the guy that owned it before me turned it into an automatic.

 

Help me - what is mike456 OP driving? I do not see year, trans etc - did I miss it?

Thank you all for you input, however I have a 1995 yj with a 4.0 5 speed.
The yj came with a 2.5. I replaced it with a 4.0 engine with matching transmission and transfer case, Also with all of the wiring harnesses. The tack wasn’t working for a lot of years. After I replace the engine with the 4.0 the speedometer didn’t work. So I thought because it set up for about 3 years it just went bad. So I replace it with a used cluster! The tack is working but the speedometer isn’t. I have ck all of the wiring.I have power to the vss The ground is good and one side I have 5 volts and the other side is 7.55. So I pulled the cluster out and on the harness on number 13 I have 11.9 volts. With the sensor vss plugged in and with a drill should the volts go up??? I’m starting to think that the vss is bad?? And thoughts? Thanks Joey
