I picked up a used hardtop for my YJ and had to repair a few blemishes in it. Since the repaired spots ended up smooth, I sanded the entire top smooth starting out with 220 and ended with 800 wet sanding. My thought was to paint the top smooth but now I’m having second thoughts. Do these hardtop look okay smooth or should I texture it like they come from the factory?
Second question is, if I texture it first, what do I use? I’m going to top coat it with a black satin finish but what do I use under the finish coat for the texture?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Are you painting it to match your jeeps color? If you are, I would go smooth. Otherwise I would consider PlastiDip and a Glossifier which also adds uv protection.

My Jeep is blue and the top I’ll be painting satin black. I’m just not sure if I want to texture it or paint it smooth.

if you're thinking of textured, it would behoove one to think Monster Liners as this product comes in a multitude of colors.

I used Monster Liner for the floor and (instead of carpet) in my Vanagon Westfalia. The stuff is great. Like @TrailBadger mentioned they have a ton of colors - including some pretty crazy shades. Definitely recommend.

If you are doing satin finish and you have already sanded it down - I would just go with smooth. My opinion.

3 inch zone lift. Fox 2.0 shocks. 35 inch nitto ridge grapplers. Bushwacker flat fenders. No name steel bumpers front and back for now.
I'd put a truck bed liner on it to give it texture and some extra protection from the sun and trail mishaps. I've actually been thinking about doing that to the hardtop on my jeep to be honest.
