I took my jeep in for it's first oil change and tire rotation. 7,000 miles. The service manager informed me that a lug stem snapped off on two tires. He claimed the new jeeps tires are being installed by robots at the factory and they were overtightened. They have ordered two new hubs and I am waiting for them to arrive. They said the other two hubs did not need to be replaced. Does anyone smart on this have any thoughts? The 'robots at the factory' story sounds like BS to me.

Welcome! Good thing the studs broke at the shop otherwise losing a wheel or two on the road would be bad. Robots programmed to over-tighten lugs would have been news worthy at 11pm.

It is all part of Skynet's master plan.

Welcome! I would really doubt the hydraulic torque mechanism at the factory did that. I would be more likely to think the guy at the shop didn't use a torque wrench when tightening them.

Perhaps the mechanic didn't have his ugga-duggas properly calibrated.

I have to agree with you. The factory, while not perfect, isn't going to tighten things until they break. More than likely someone got overzealous with the impact at the dealership.

That's why I re-torque all lug nuts after any tire service. Better to find out in the driveway than out on the road. Even after the best of services I have found over-tightened or cross-threaded lug nuts ON:annoyed:
