I have an old Moen faucet in my Airstream trailer that the wife really loves. It was in need of repairs and I could purchase all of the parts except the original brass and copper base. The threads that the side sprayer connected to were stripped, so I couldn't get the nut on, which holds the whole thing to the counter, nor screw on the side sprayer connection.
I had never heard of a thread file before but decided to try it for the repair. It's a good solid tool, very well made.
It took a lot of filing and bending the water pipes out of the way but finally the new nut went onto the threads. When filing you want to use the thread count on the file that matches the threads to be filed. Count the number of threads in an inch and that's the number you match to the file. File in the direction of the threads (not across) and rotate around the threads, trying to thread a new nut as you go; don't force it. Eventually you'll have the threads cleaned/sharpened and the nut will go on easily.
There are metric files as well as standard pitches. Very pleased and it's good addition to my tool box
